The journey as an author

…started as a senior in high school. My classmates and I had an incredible creative writing teacher who opened up a world of writing to me. Mrs. Burkhart was instructive and very encouraging. She pulled out of me a love for writing.

Though I wrote poetry and did some journaling the years following high school, it wasn’t until I used my doctoral thesis as the basis for my first book. The Perfect Pastor? was produced and published in 2007. It was designed to teach through story what the Bible says about the life and work of a pastor. The experience was both hard and exhilerating.

Since then, life was too full to write another book. That is, until I retired as a pastor. Moving to south Denver and plugging into South Fellowship in Littleton was personally and spiritually refreshing. South Fellowship is a church filled with creatives - artists, musicians, and writers. It was at South Fellowship that I met author and blogger Rebecca Livermore of Professional Content Creation and her husband, Chuck. He is also an author. I joined their writers group, where I learned so much about the craft and publishing. Rubbing shoulders with them and also making friends with the very creative music director Aaron Bjorklund, a man of many talents, sparked those imaginative juices.

In that refreshing environment and at Aaron’s suggestion, the next project was born. ThanksLiving: Gaining a perspective to enrich your life was published shortly after Thanksgiving in 2015.

While I have a lengthy list of book ideas, the current project is a book for Christian parents. This book is not a how-to. God knows there are hundreds of those books. Instead, the book offers the why for parenting and gives a biblically informed foundation for parents and their children. This foundation is grounded in the biblical theme of redemptive history. It presents the growing paradigm shift in Christian parenting, which is how we live and raise our children in light of the Gospel.

The book will address core aspects of parenting but my desire is to help moms and dads see their purpose and goals as parents, to encourage them in their journey, and to relieve them of the pressure to parent in a perfect way.  So, stay tuned for this new book!
